A Serenade to Music

May 2011

May 2011

Saturday 21st Spring concert: A Serenade to Music,

with music by Copland, Stravinsky, Bach and Vaughan Williams,

featuring the St Mary's Orchestra and Singers with Julia Hwang

(solo violin).

Review by Judith Whitehouse

A Latin mass, a stately home, a rare bird, a future star, Shakespeare, Sir Henry Wood and an entire menagerie – what could they possibly have in common except another groundbreaking St Mary’s Singers concert at Truro Cathedral? This Serenade to Music opened with one of Bach’s short Masses craftily recycled from previous cantatas. The G minor has some gorgeous oboe parts, three nicely varied solo arias, sung with sensitivity and panache by Cathedral Choral Scholars Tim Braithwaite (alto), Kieran White (tenor) and Jacob Dennison (bass), framed by some typically fiendish Bach choral writing equal to anything in his longer works. Luke Bond’s meticulous direction ensured that the work’s textures were displayed to the full – the fugal ending of the Gloria producing a splendid accretion of sound.Stravinsky often acknowledged the influence of Bach and his chamber concerto Dumbarton Oaks is a fascinating take on baroque clarity of line. The orchestra with many telling solo moments matched the energy and commitment of Luke Bond’s conducting, making the most of the delicacy and even humour of such a complex piece. After the interval, the eagerly awaited performance by 15-year old Julia Hwang of Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending. To say that the entire audience was rapt is almost understatement; I’ve lost count of the Larks I’ve heard over the years but this one was so special it defies further description – soloist, orchestra and conductor were all truly inspired and Julia richly deserved her prolonged ovation. The Serenade to Music which followed came close to recreating the magical wash of sound we’d just heard but not quite – Vaughan Williams’ original orchestration makes it an expensive piece to perform, and glorious string playing plus Paul Comeau’s piano reduction of 18 brass and wind instruments, percussion and harp couldn’t be faulted, but I really missed the full palette of colours. The choir sang superbly, everywhere between one and thirty voices – a delight to hear.

The grand finale of Copland’s Five American Songs began with some truly massive singing from bass Choral Scholar Henry Hawkesworth, followed by the choir soulfully nostalgic and in simple folkstyle, paving the way for the ultimate nonsense song “I bought me a cat”, full of magnificent farmyard impressions much enjoyed by the audience – a fun way to end a great evening of variety and virtuosity!
